Installation

EV charger installation in Melbourne: what's actually involved

Understanding the stages of a home charger installation makes it far easier to read a quote and see why two prices can differ so much. All electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians.

The five stages of a typical job

Stage 1

Assessing the supply

The electrician confirms whether the property is single or three phase, checks the main switch and service capacity, and works out how much headroom is available for a dedicated EV circuit.

Stage 2

Checking the switchboard

An EV charger needs its own circuit breaker and RCD protection. Older or full boards may need a new sub-board, extra spaces, or replacement before the circuit can be added.

Stage 3

Planning the cable route

The run from the switchboard to the charger location determines cable size, labour and whether the route can be concealed. Longer or harder routes cost more.

Stage 4

Mounting and connecting the charger

The unit is mounted at a sensible height and position for your parking arrangement, then wired to the new dedicated circuit.

Stage 5

Testing, commissioning and compliance

The circuit is tested, the charger is commissioned and configured, and the electrician issues the required electrical safety documentation for the work.
