Question 1

What does EV Charger Install Melbourne actually do?

Accepted Answer

We are an independent information and quote request service for Melbourne homeowners. We publish plain-language guides on home EV charging, then help you turn what you have learned into a properly detailed enquiry. We do not carry out electrical work ourselves. Where suitable participating licensed electricians cover your area, your enquiry is passed on so they can quote the installation directly with you.

Question 2

Does it cost anything to request quotes?

Accepted Answer

Requesting quotes through this website is free and there is no obligation to proceed. If you decide to go ahead, you deal with, and pay, the electrician directly.

Question 3

How much does EV charger installation cost in Melbourne?

Accepted Answer

As a general guide, home EV charger installations in Melbourne can range from around $1,000 to $2,500+, depending on the charger, cable distance, switchboard and electrical requirements. Already have your own EV charger? Installation-only pricing for a straightforward home installation will generally be at the lower end of the range, while longer cable runs, three-phase installations, switchboard upgrades or other electrical work can increase the cost. Need the charger supplied as well? Your electrician can include the EV charger in their quote. The total price will depend on the charger brand and features you choose, as well as the installation requirements. These are general price guides only. The easiest way to know what your installation will cost is to fill out our quote form, upload photos of your switchboard and proposed charger location, and compare quotes from licensed electricians.

Question 4

Do I need single phase or three phase power?

Accepted Answer

Single phase power is the standard supply to most Australian homes and comfortably runs a 7kW charger, which fully charges most EVs overnight. Three phase power has three active supply wires and is needed for 11kW and 22kW chargers. If you are unsure what you have, an electrician can confirm it from your switchboard.

Question 5

What's the difference between 7kW, 11kW and 22kW chargers?

Accepted Answer

The number is the maximum power the charger can deliver. A 7kW single phase unit adds roughly 40km of range per hour for a typical EV. 11kW and 22kW units are three phase and charge faster, but only if your car's onboard charger can accept that rate — many EVs cap at 7kW or 11kW AC, so a 22kW wallbox will not always charge any faster.

Question 6

Can I charge my EV from solar?

Accepted Answer

Many modern chargers support solar diversion, meaning they can throttle charging to use excess generation rather than importing from the grid. Whether that is worthwhile depends on your system size, your daytime charging pattern and your feed-in tariff. If you have solar or a home battery, note it in your enquiry so quotes account for it.

Question 7

Will I need a switchboard upgrade?

Accepted Answer

Some homes do. Older boards with ceramic fuses, no main switch RCD, or no spare capacity often need work before a dedicated charger circuit can be added. Many Melbourne homes need nothing at all. An electrician confirms this by inspecting the board — photos help form an early view.

Question 8

Do I have to buy the charger myself?

Accepted Answer

You can either buy the charger yourself or ask the electrician to supply it. Both are common. Tell us which you prefer in your enquiry so the quotes you receive reflect it.

Question 9

Are the electricians trusted and qualified?

Accepted Answer

Electricians apply to join our network and are only able to receive enquiries once we have approved their account. As part of that approval we collect and check their business details, ABN, electrical licence number and confirmation of insurance, and we can suspend an account at any time. All electrical work in Victoria must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and only approved, licensed businesses ever receive your details. We still recommend confirming licence details yourself and getting your quote in writing.

Question 10

Who will my details be shared with?

Accepted Answer

Your enquiry will only be shared with up to three trusted, qualified and licensed electricians in your area who can help with your installation. They will contact you directly to discuss your requirements and provide a quote. Once three electricians have received your enquiry it is closed and no one else can access it. Your name, phone number, email and address are never shown publicly, and an electrician only sees them once they have been granted your enquiry.

Question 11

What happens to my details after I submit an enquiry?

Accepted Answer

Your enquiry details and any photos you upload are used to describe the job. With your consent, they are shared with a maximum of three approved, licensed electricians so they can prepare a quote and contact you. We do not sell your details to anyone else, and you can ask us to remove them at any time.

Question 12

How many electricians will contact me?

Accepted Answer

Never more than three. We share your enquiry with up to three approved licensed electricians who cover your suburb and suit the work — that is a hard limit built into our system, not just a policy. Sometimes fewer are available in your area, in which case you will hear from fewer. You are under no obligation to accept any quote.

Question 13

Which parts of Melbourne do you cover?

Accepted Answer

Enquiries are accepted across metropolitan Melbourne, including the inner, eastern, south eastern and bayside suburbs. Send your suburb and postcode with your enquiry and we will confirm coverage.

Question 14

Why get a home EV charger installed at all?

Accepted Answer

Home charging is generally the cheapest and most convenient way to run an EV, avoiding public fast charger pricing and letting you start each day with a full battery. A properly installed dedicated circuit is also safer than long-term charging from a general power outlet.

Question 15

How long does an installation take?

Accepted Answer

A straightforward home installation is often completed within a few hours. Longer cable runs, concealed cabling, switchboard work or three phase changes take longer and may involve additional visits or distributor paperwork.
