Why we don't publish a single price
Every advertised "from" price for EV charger installation assumes a best-case job: a modern switchboard with spare capacity, a short surface-mounted cable run, easy access and single phase supply. Plenty of Melbourne homes fit that description — plenty do not.
Because we are an independent information service rather than an electrical contractor, we have no reason to quote a headline number that later changes. Instead, this page explains the six things that move the price, so you can judge whether the quotes you receive are sensible.

Describe these accurately in your enquiry and the quotes you receive will be far closer to the final figure.
Distance from switchboard to charger
The single biggest variable. A charger mounted on the other side of the switchboard wall is quick. A run across the house, through a roof space or under a driveway takes hours and far more cable.
Cable route and method
Surface-mounted conduit in a garage is cheapest. Concealed cabling in finished walls, trenching to a detached garage, or penetrating brick and concrete all add labour.
Single phase or three phase
A 7kW single phase circuit is the standard job. Three phase installations need heavier cable and more protective devices, and adding three phase where it does not exist is a separate, much larger project.
Switchboard condition
Boards with no spare capacity, ceramic fuses or missing safety switches usually need work before a dedicated charger circuit can be added. This can be the difference between a modest and a significant quote.
The charger you choose
Basic wallboxes cost far less than units with load management, solar diversion, smart metering and app control. Hardware is often a large share of the total.
Access and extras
Tight roof spaces, two-storey runs, load management devices, isolators, bollards or weatherproof enclosures all add time and materials.

There is no single figure. The cost of a home EV charger installation in Melbourne depends on the charger itself, the length and difficulty of the cable run, whether the supply is single or three phase, and whether any switchboard work is required. The only accurate number is a quote based on your property.
Why do quotes for the same charger differ so much?
Because the electrical work differs. A short surface-mounted run to a modern switchboard is a fundamentally different job to a 25 metre concealed run with a board upgrade. Cable size, protective devices and labour hours all scale with the job.
Is the charger included in an installation quote?
It depends on the electrician. Some supply the hardware, others install a unit you have already purchased. Say which you prefer when you request quotes so the numbers are comparable.
