Three ways solar-capable chargers operate

Most smart chargers offer some combination of these. The names differ between brands, the behaviour does not.

Solar-only charging

The charger only draws power when you are exporting surplus, ramping up and down with cloud cover. Cheapest per kilometre, but charging pauses when generation drops.

Solar-boosted charging

A hybrid mode: use all available surplus and top up from the grid to maintain a minimum charge rate. Practical when you need a certain amount of range by morning.

Scheduled off-peak charging

Charge overnight on a cheaper tariff. Simple, reliable and available on almost every smart charger, with or without solar.

What to check

Before you buy a solar-friendly charger

  • Does it actually support solar diversion? Many "smart" chargers only offer scheduling, not surplus tracking.
  • Does it need a CT clamp or meter? Surplus tracking usually requires a current sensor at the main switchboard — that affects installation work.
  • Is it compatible with your inverter or battery? Some chargers integrate natively with particular brands; others work independently via metering.
  • What is the minimum charge current? Single phase chargers usually cannot go below about 6A, so very small surpluses may not trigger charging.
  • Does it play well with load management? Important where the main supply is close to capacity.

Is it worth it for your household?

Solar charging is most valuable when the car is home during daylight — retirees, hybrid workers, second vehicles and weekend driving.

If the car is at work every weekday, an off-peak schedule may deliver most of the benefit with none of the extra hardware. Compare your feed-in tariff against your off-peak import rate: the bigger the gap, the more solar diversion is worth.

Either way, tell the electrician you have solar or a battery. It changes charger selection, metering and where sensors need to be installed.

Can I charge my EV directly from solar?

Yes, if your charger supports solar diversion. The charger monitors your home's import and export and adjusts the charging current so it uses surplus generation rather than drawing from the grid.

Do I need a bigger solar system to charge an EV?

Not necessarily, but the more surplus you export during the day, the more of your charging you can shift to solar. Whether expanding the system is worthwhile depends on your generation profile, your feed-in tariff and when the car is actually home.

Can I charge my EV from a home battery?

Technically yes, though it is often less efficient than charging directly from solar or off-peak grid power because of the extra round trip through the battery. Some systems let you prioritise household loads over the car.

What if the car is at work during the day?

Then solar charging only helps on weekends and days off. Many households in that situation use off-peak scheduling instead, and set the charger to start automatically overnight.
