Charging a BYD at home

BYD's Australian range — Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Sealion and the plug-in hybrid Shark — uses the Type 2 AC inlet that is standard here, so home charging is not brand-specific. You can use a BYD-supplied wallbox or any compatible Type 2 unit, and the electrical work is the same either way: a dedicated circuit, correctly sized cable, protection devices, mounting, testing and a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

The detail that catches people out is the onboard AC charger rate, which differs between BYD models and model years. That rate, not the wallbox, sets how fast the car charges from AC. Check your owner's manual before paying for a higher-output unit — for most Melbourne homes on single phase supply, a 7kW wallbox refills a typical daily commute many times over during off-peak hours.

Can I get a home charger installed for my BYD in Melbourne?
