Installing a charger you already own

A growing share of Melbourne EV owners buy the charger before they think about installation. Dealers bundle a wallbox with the car, manufacturers run promotions, and online pricing is often sharper than an installer's supply price. The result is a box in the garage and a job that is purely electrical work.

That job is unchanged by who bought the hardware: a dedicated circuit at the switchboard, correctly sized cable to the parking spot, protection devices, mounting, connection, testing and a Certificate of Electrical Safety. What does change is that the electrician is commissioning a unit they did not select, so they need to know exactly which model it is before they quote.

It can sometimes be run at reduced output, sometimes not, and converting a supply to three phase is a distributor-involved job rather than an afternoon's work. Will an electrician install a charger I bought myself?

Many will, and some prefer not to. Attitudes vary because the electrician takes on commissioning a unit they did not supply. Stating the exact brand, model and rating in your enquiry means it reaches electricians who are comfortable with that specific unit rather than wasting your time.

What information should I give about a charger I already own?

Brand and model, rated output in kW, whether it is single or three phase, tethered or socketed, and whether it needs an internet or CT clamp connection for load management or solar diversion. A photo of the unit's compliance label is ideal.

Does buying the charger myself make installation cheaper?

It removes the hardware margin from the electrician's quote, but the electrical work is priced the same way regardless. Whether you end up better off depends on what you paid for the unit and whether the model suits your supply.

What about warranty on a charger I supplied?

Hardware warranty stays with the manufacturer and the retailer you bought from. The electrician warrants their own installation work, not the product. Confirm both in writing before proceeding.

What if the charger I bought does not suit my home?

It happens — most commonly a three phase 22kW unit bought for a single phase home. An electrician will tell you at quoting stage what would be required, and you can then decide whether to change the plan or the unit. Nothing here obliges you to proceed.
